OUR HISTORY

The Brunty Farms story began when founder and owner, Jeff Brunty, began raising seven chickens at the age of 13. After visiting a friends house and eating fresh eggs from his chickens-he was hooked! That initial breakfast, along with some sweet talking to his Grandma and Grandpa to use their land, sparked the start of what is now known as Brunty Farms. Over the early years Jeff began learning and teaching himself the ins and outs of pasture raised farming-raising everything from chickens, turkeys, rabbits, pheasant, and emu. He read books from Joel Salatin, began processing his own chickens for locals,  and was determined to self launch this childhood dream into a career. Fast forward to ten years later and Jeff had moved from his original farm to 17 acres in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Jeff, along with his now wife, Mel, expanded the farm venture to raise pastured pork, beef and lamb, along with the original staples of poultry and eggs. The two of them started a meat CSA, began selling at the local farmers' markets, and started an on farm, all honors system store. After five years of increasing growth they purchased a much larger farm in Ashland, Ohio. The operation continued to grow and it was now clear that there was a need for more control over the processing standards and consistency of their premium products. This goal came to fruition in 2018 with the opening of our first butcher shop, The Farmer's Rail. In 2021, The Farmer's Rail expanded into Cuyahoga Falls and Hudson, opening two new full-service butcher shops.
